During World War II, approximately 10,000 U.S. Army Air Corps flyers were trained at the Pine Bluff School of Aviation, site of today's Grider Field Municipal Airport.

In addition to the activities listed, Central Arkansas is home to seven state parks and four lakes that provide outdoor enthusiasts with opportunities for hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
